Did You Know That...?
- 75% of orchestra musicians reported having at least one performance-related medical problem
- 50% of string players surveyed reported using beta-blockers prior to performing
- 25% of musicians experience debilitating performance anxiety
The incidence of performance-related disorders in musicians is reaching epidemic proportions in our society today. Many musicians, disillusioned with the ineffectiveness of traditional healthcare, have accepted their plight and suffer in silence, which can eventually lead to more serious health problems.
After ten years of conducting research on stress in the performing arts in the Department of Psychology at NYU, we have developed a clinically-tested integrative music therapy approach in which musicians are guided to use the healing power of their own music, along with specially designed stress management techniques, to overcome stage fright, depression, and self-destructive behaviors which often underlie performance-related injuries. Stressed musicians are empowered by this short-term, pro-active treatment approach which deals with the whole person – body, mind, emotions, relationships and creative expression. If necessary, our clients are referred to music medicine experts and/or re-training specialists to pinpoint and heal the root cause of performance-related disorders.
Along with treatment, we have also developed a creativity-based prevention program – the Three Level Certificate Training Program in Performance Wellness - for music educators, students, music therapists, and clinicians who treat musicians, which we have been presenting at music education departments and conservatories across the country and around the world.
